Heavy Rain To Return To The Pacific Northwest Tonight, Peaking On Monday With a Flood Watch Issued, Centering Western Washington State, Including Seattle

by

National Weather Force has issued a Flood Watch for portions of the Pacific Northwest from extreme Northwest Oregon through the entire Western half of Washington, effective Monday February 28, 2022 so read on for details …

The rain is expected to push into the inner metro areas of Oregon and Washington by this evening and overnight tonight, lasting the entire night and off and on for your Sunday.  This portion of the storm will not be the flood risk part however.  National Weather Force models are projecting a high risk area, a large one, but very heavy rainfall within the semi-warmish system for your Monday.  As Sunday night moves deep into the night, we will see the onset of the heavy rainfall across the area, lasting through all of Monday.  Heavy mountain snow will also hit as a result, but since this is a warmer type system, the elevation of the snow-level will be middle mountain level and not affect the coastal ranges west of Interstate 5, the exception being the Olympics.

National Weather Force models is projecting the flow to be due west to east, putting Seattle in the Puget Sound Convergence Zone for enhanced heavy precipitation there.  This convergence zone is activated as winds from the west go around this smaller, but taller range.  They convergence back together over Seattle, a reason for your enhanced thunderstorm risks during cold core events.

Because of the nature of this system, being warmer, this will allow for capping in the mid-levels and no thunderstorms will be expected in the region as a result.

A National Weather Force flood watch is issued when conditions are favorable for systems moving in that creates heavy rainfall in a short period of time that causes flooding and hazardous weather conditions.  Rock-slides will also be common during these watches …
